CIO note - Java EE 5 and Microsoft .NET

  • both for developing the Webenabled applications ( however, .NET also can builds Windows applications. Java EE 5 can build Windows apps but you can forget about it as it is not worth to consider this option)
  • Platforms and operating systems : Java EE 5 is workable for unix, windows hardware and operating systems. However .NET supports C#, C++, VB but it's only for Windows servers
  • Both support third party databases and tools, but the monitoring tools is more expensive for unix platform

Choice between Java EE 5 and Microsoft .NET

  • depends on your current environment, staff, supply chain partners, management relationships, …
  • It is not only a technical choice
  • the cost are similar in turn of TCO
  • Java 5 EE + Oracle is considered ‘high end’ in most industries
  • .NET is considered cheaper, lower performance, lower reliability
